Documented source provenance, artwork credits, and third-party acknowledgments.
Garden Nook combines original product content and interface assets with selected historical botanical artwork and third-party technology. This page documents provenance and attribution while keeping copyright status tied to each source item’s specific rights statement.
Effective date: August 26, 2026
Garden Nook uses selected historical botanical illustrations sourced from The New York Public Library (NYPL) Digital Collections. Rights status is evaluated at the individual item or capture level using the rights statement supplied by NYPL. Eligible items may be labeled by NYPL as “No Known U.S. Copyright” or made available under CC0. Garden Nook does not treat a “No Known U.S. Copyright” label as an affirmative determination that the item is in the public domain in every jurisdiction or that no privacy, publicity, trademark, or other rights can apply.
Garden Nook imported metadata from these collections, matched a conservative subset to catalog plants, stored copies of selected images for app delivery, and preserves source/provenance metadata so the original item can be traced. The current MVP build records 57 matched artwork records linked to 18 catalog plants.
For each NYPL asset published in Garden Nook, Garden Nook maintains an item-level provenance record that identifies, to the extent available, the work or item title, creator, collection, NYPL source-item or capture URL, the exact NYPL rights label or rights statement, the date the asset was retrieved or downloaded, and any requested credit. NYPL explains that “No Known U.S. Copyright” means it believes there are no known U.S. copyright restrictions, while other rights may still apply. For eligible reuse, NYPL requests the source credit “From The New York Public Library” and a link back to the applicable Digital Collections item.

Historical botanical art is used for educational and aesthetic presentation. Garden Nook does not represent that every illustration depicts the exact cultivar, growth stage, color form, or local phenotype a user may encounter. Where a trustworthy species-level match is unavailable, Garden Nook uses generic category fallback artwork rather than intentionally showing an incorrect species image.
Garden Nook includes custom generic botanical category artwork for major plant groups such as herbs, vegetables, fruiting plants, trees, shrubs, flowering perennials, groundcovers, ornamental grasses, succulent/xeric plants, and vines/climbers. These category images are visual fallbacks and are not intended to identify a particular species. Garden Nook also uses original interface design, copy, icons, layouts, and other product assets unless otherwise credited.
Garden Nook’s plant catalog and seasonal-care content are compiled into structured plant records for Austin/Central Texas use. Current records include attributes such as sun and water needs, planting/pruning/fertilizing windows, edible or culinary characteristics, pet cautions, pollinator value, container suitability, spreading risk, and maintenance difficulty. Where external references are used and source information is available, Garden Nook records source or provenance information for those references.
A complete item-by-item public bibliography is not currently displayed for every horticultural fact. Garden Nook prioritizes source citations and provenance for external references involving safety, toxicity, edibility, legal or restricted-plant information, and region-specific claims. The plant catalog itself is not presented as a substitute for professional or emergency guidance.
